Bethel Inn Resort
The Bethel Inn Resort is a four-season resort located on the village common of Bethel, Maine with an 18-hole golf course and small convention center.
History
In 1911, Bethel's Prospect Hotel, which provided lodging for many of Dr. John George Gehring's out patients, was severely damaged by fire. After a plan to rebuild it failed, five of Dr. Gehring's grateful patients included him in a partnership to construct the Bethel Inn so that people coming to see him for treatment would always have a place to stay. The Inn opened its doors to the public in 1913.[1]
Through the forties and fifties, the Inn thrived. But by the 1960s, survival became nearly impossible with the changing vacationing habits of the modern traveler. The Inn struggled mightily under a succession of owners until February 28, 1979 when it closed its doors. On May 22, 1979, Richard D. Rasor purchased the Bethel Inn. In 1986, the business underwent a $7,500,000 expansion project, funded primarily by the sale of 40 new condominiums, in order to finance a conference center and health club.[2]
Present day
The Bethel Inn encompasses 200 acres, 158 guest rooms, an 18-hole, 6663 yard, par 72 course golf course, conference center, health club and swimming pool, dining rooms, lake house, and cross-country ski trails.
