Battle of Abu Hamed

The Battle of Abu Hamed was part of the British Sudan Campaign of the 1890s. It took place on 7 August 1897 at Abu Hamed. Mahdist positions outside the town were taken by the a Sudanese brigade, supported by two guns from the Royal Artillery, under the command of Major General Archibald Hunter.

The Mahdists were driven through the toewn, sustaining heavy losses, Mohammed Zain, their commander, being captured. Egyptian losses were 80 killed and wounded, including four British officers.[1]
