Bator Sambuev (Russian: Батор Самбуев) is Russian-Canadian chess player who holds the title of Grandmaster.
Biography
Sambuev was born on November 25, 1980 in Russia. In 1999, he gained the title of International Master, and in 2006 became a Grandmaster. He emigrated to Montreal, Canada in June 2007, and began playing there. He won the Canadian Chess Championship in 2011 ahead of Eric Hansen on tiebreak, qualifying for the right to play in the 2013 World Cup where he met Alexander Morozevich. The two split the first two classical games, but Sambuev lost the rapid playoff 1 1/2- 1/2.
Sambuev won the Toronto Open in 2006, the Ontario Open in 2009, 2010 and 2011, and the Quebec Open in 2011. In 2011, Sambuev came 1st at the Hamilton Open ahead of future superGM Wesley So. In 2012, Sambuev again won the Canadian Chess Championship, and played 1st board for Canada in the Chess Olympiad.[1]
