The Asian Institute of Management "AIM" is an international management school. It is one of the few business schools in Asia to be internationally accredited with the AACSB. It was established in partnership with Harvard Business School[1] and uses the Harvard Business School case study teaching methodology. It was described by Asiaweek magazine (a TIME publication) as the best in the Asia-Pacific region in terms of executive education.[2]

The institute was established in 1968 in partnership with Harvard Business School, the Ford Foundation, and visionaries of the Asian academic and business communities.[3] It is located in Makati City, Philippines. AIM has a local board of trustees and an international board of governors.

Schools

Washington SyCip Graduate School of Business

The Washington SyCip Graduate School of Business (SyCip School) has two degree programs: the 16-month Master in Business Administration and the Executive MBA program. Instruction is based primarily on the case method developed at Harvard Business School. The school applies American and European management principles to problems in Asia. Over the decades, however, the school has built up a bank of its own Asian cases.

Stephen Zuellig Graduate School of Development Management

The Stephen Zuellig Graduate School of Development Management (Zuellig School) is in the field of development management in Asia. The Zuellig School has an 11-month Master in Development Management program intended for executives and managers from developing nations. In addition, the Zuellig School conducts research, certificate courses in development management, and institution-building activities for Asian organizations. The School teaches development managers in matters that involve social and economic development of sectors, most especially the marginalized.

Development management education at AIM began in 1976 with the offering of the Rural Development Management Program (RDMP). In 1985, learnings from RDMP were developed into a four-week certificate course called the Program for Development Managers (PDM). Four years later, the PDM became the core of the first offering of the Master in Development Management (MDM) course. In 1991, the Center for Development Management (CDM) was formally established as a school at AIM, and has since conducted 25 batches of the MDM Program with over 1,000 graduates coming from 40 countries within and beyond Asia.

On March 13, 2014, CDM was renamed the Stephen Zuellig Graduate School of Development Management in recognition of Dr. Stephen Zuellig's generous donation to the school. Dr. Zuellig is an economist, entrepreneur, social investor, corporate citizen, visionary and Filipino business leader. A few years before, the Stephen Zuellig Center for Asian Business Transformation was created as a Center of Excellence in AIM to help homegrown Asian businesses develop into competitive industries. A scholarship fund was established with his support, assisting development managers in maximising their potential and impact on their respective communities. Through his donation to the Center for Development Management, Dr. Zuellig cemented his partnership with AIM.

Executive Education and Lifelong Learning Center

The Executive Education and Lifelong Learning Center (EXCELL) programs assist executives in the Asian region to become managers and leaders. It offers the 18-month Executive MBA, rated No. 1 by Asiaweek in 2000.[2]

AIM Dr. Andrew L. Tan Center for Tourism

The AIM Dr. Andrew L. Tan Center for Tourism provides studies that support the tourism and hospitality industry of the Philippines.

AIM Ramon V. del Rosario Sr. Center for Corporate Responsibility

The AIM Ramon V. del Rosario Sr.-Center for Corporate Social Responsibility focuses on social responsibility relative to the competitiveness of corporations and their impact on society.

AIM Policy Center

In 2011, AIM Policy Center (APC) expanded its research to tackle the roots of inequality and how these hinder sustained reforms toward inclusive growth. In many developing and underdeveloped countries in the world, inequality in its various forms—economic, social and political—constitutes a major barrier to development.

In partnership with colleagues in AIM and scholars from other institutions, APC has produced 16 working papers in 2013. Of which three have been published in peer reviewed professional and academic journals and four are under review. A total of 89 articles quoted APC work in the local and international media, along with several local TV interviews with the Executive Director and some members of the team. This research is underpinned by several partnerships, notably with Konrad Adenauer Stiftung (KAS), United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and International Development Research Center (IDRC).

Competitiveness, competition policy, and industrialization strategy

KAS has been the institutional partner of APC on competition and industrial policy. APC has been involved in developing and collecting competitiveness indicators for the Philippines, along with analyses to explore and promote sustained reforms in competitiveness and competition promotion. This program is underscored by the yearly release of the World Competitiveness Yearbook in collaboration with the International Institute for Management Development (IMD).

Since 2012, a growing part of the APC’s policy work has focused on how small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) could more strongly contribute to high and inclusive growth. With IDRC, AIM is working on a multi-country research project on SMEs in middle income countries in Asia. In 2013, two workshops were held and attended by Asian researchers and members of the advisory committee. The project culminated with the Enterprise Performance in Asia Conference held in Cebu City on November 7–9, 2013. The gathering was attended by scholars, researchers, entrepreneurs, government officials, and development practitioners in SMEs from 22 countries.

Social Protection and Social Insurance

APC works on issues related to social protection, social budgeting, and investments (notably for children and the youth) with UNICEF. This partnership led to the conception of the Pinoy Youth Barometer Project which concluded in December 2013 with five rounds of surveys that collected the perceptions of high school and college students nationwide on education, employment, migration, politics, and current events. On July 19, 2013, the 2013 Pinoy Youth Barometer Conference: Prospects for Education, Employment, and Migration was held at The Bayleaf Hotel, Intramuros, Manila. The conference consisted of a series of studies on policy issues in relation to the youth. With presenters and reactors from the fields of economics, sociology and psychology, the conference provided perspectives on the youth’s perceptions on education, employment, migration, politics, and current events. Among those in attendance were researchers, academicians, policy makers, lawyers, and students.

Building an inclusive democracy in Asia

Another area is on governance and building an inclusive democracy. APC research in this area is underpinned by the most extensive dataset on political dynasties and its socio-economic correlates in the Philippines. The results of the study were presented in a conference entitled "Building an Inclusive Democracy" held on March 7, 2013. The event featured research presentations and insights from experts including Ateneo De Manila University, De La Salle University, and UP NCPAG. The study produced a paper "Political Dynasties and Poverty: Resolving the ‘Chicken or the Egg’ Question" in 2013.

Technical assistance

APC also provided technical assistance and presented research in various fora, including those organized by AUSAid, the Philippine Center for Investigative Journalism, Development Academy of the Philippines, Ateneo de Manila Law School, University of the Philippines School of Economics, University of the Philippines National College of Public Administration and Governance, University of Navarra in Spain (via Skype), Kyoto University (as part of the Western Economics International Association Conference), Chulalongkorn University in Thailand (on competition policy in ASEAN) among others.

AIM Ramon V. del Rosario Sr.-C.V. Starr Center for Corporate Governance

The AIM Ramon V. Del Rosario Sr.-C.V. Starr Center for Corporate Governance seeks to promote good corporate governance through research, training, and advocacy. The Center also manages the Hills Program on Governance which addresses issues at the intersection of public and private sectors by confronting corruption and encouraging accountability.

AIM TeaM Energy Center for Bridging Leadership

The AIM TeaM Energy Center for Bridging Leadership envisions a society without divides by developing leaders with the same purpose in Mindanao, the Philippines, and Asia. The Center shares partners with like-minded institutions for capacity building, applied research, advocacy, and by providing platforms for dialogue and change through its two-pronged fellowship programs.

AIM Dr. Stephen Zuellig Center for Asian Business Transformation

The AIM Dr. Stephen Zuellig Center for Asian Business Transformation promotes the development of small and medium enterprises in Asia into competitive multinational companies through business innovation.

AIM Gov. Jose B. Fernandez Jr. Center for Banking and Finance

In September 1994, Far East Bank and Trust Company and the Asian Institute of Management launched the JBF Center in honor of the late Philippine Central Bank Governor Jose B. Fernandez, Jr. The Center’s mandate focuses on the encouragement of research and discussion of issues in the financial services industry, the improvement of the competence of Asian financial managers, the forging of alliances among business institutions in Asia, and the promotion of Asian arts and culture in the business community.

Alliances

The World Bank selected AIM as its partner in Asia with the establishment of the AIM-World Bank Development Resource Center in October 2002, making AIM the first private management education institution in the world to partner with the World Bank. In addition, AIM is a center of excellence of the Asian Development Bank and collaborates with the ADB in delivering programs that cultivate progress in Asian societies.[4]

AIM is a member of the Association of Asia-Pacific Business Schools (AAPBS), Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB), European Foundation for Management Development (EFMD), International Management Development Network (INTERMAN), International University Consortium for Executive Education, Pacific Asian Consortium for International Business Education and Research (PACIBER), and Partnership in International Management (PIM).

AIM is a member institution of the Graduate Management Admission Council.[5]

AIM has strong linkages with the Asian Development Bank, Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation, International Monetary Fund, International Finance Corporation, Japan Bank for International Cooperation, Southeast Asian Regional Center for Graduate Study and Research in Agriculture, United Nations Development Programme, and the World Bank.

AIM programs and projects have been supported by The Asia Foundation, Australian Agency for International Development, Canadian International Development Agency, German Technical Cooperation, Japan International Cooperation Agency, Konrad Adenauer Foundation, and U.S. Agency for International Development.

Under the International Student Exchange Program (ISEP), the top 40% of MBA students are given the opportunity to study for one term in more than 30 partner learning institutions in Asia, Australia, Europe, the Americas, and Africa.
