Alessandro Sartori is an Italian fashion designer born in Biella, Italy in 1966. He has been artistic director at Berluti, a luxury menswear company that is part of LVMH, and before he was the artistic director of Z Zegna, brand of the Ermenegildo Zegna Group. In February 2016, he has been appointed Artistic Director of the Italian luxury giant Ermenegildo Zegna Group, with responsibility across all Zegna brands and all creative functions.
Early life and education
He received a degree in textile engineering in Biella, Northern Italy, followed by a degree in Fashion Design in Milan in 1989.[1]
Career
In 2003, he became Creative Director of the newly created "Z Zegna" at Ermenegildo Zegna. He presented the Z Zegna first runway show in New York City in February 2007.[2] Z Zegna successfully appeared at five New York Fashion Weeks, and then moved to Milan starting in June 2009. On 1 July 2011 he was appointed as artistic director at Berluti with the aim of creating a luxury total wardrobe.
On January 20, 2012 he unveiled his first collection at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, with footwear occupying rows of chairs lined up as if for a fashion show. Women's Wear Daily stated "It was an impressive debut."[3] "Sartori’s collection was worn by a multigenerational cast of models in vignettes that telegraphed the Berluti lifestyle: playing chess in the library of a country chateau; having cocktails in a groovy apartment; gathering with friends under a full moon for a midnight shoe-polishing party, with Dom Pérignon as the shining agent (something serious Berluti devotees actually do)."
His last collection for Berluti, presented during Paris Menswear Fashion Week, on January 22, 2016 was viewed as his best collection for the brand; Luke Leitch, on Vogue.com wrote: "This collection contained almost as many potential angles to elucidate excellence in menswear as there were grains of volcanic sand on the runway".[4]
On February 1, 2016 Women's Wear Daily confirmed the rumors about Sartori leaving Berluti. [5][6][7]
On February 5, 2016 Ermenegildo Zegna Group revealed that Alessandro Sartori was appointed artistic director with responsibility across all Zegna brands and all creative functions. [8] [9] Sartori officially joined the Ermenegildo Zegna Group in June 2016. His first full season for the company will be Autumn/Winter 2017.
Awards and honors
In 2005 GQ Spain awarded Sartori the title of "Best International Designer" of the year.[10]
In 2015 GQ Spain awarded again Sartori as "Best Designer of the Year".
Clients
At Z Zegna's, actors Daniel Brühl and Matthew Goode wore outfits designed by Sartori.
In 2003 he designed the outfit worn by Adrien Brody to receive the Oscar for Best Actor for the film "The Pianist".[11]
During his years at Berluti, many actors and celebrities have worn Sartori's designs such as Will Smith, Robert Downey Jr, Joshua Jackson and others.
In 2015 Sartori started a collaboration with Benjamin Millepied (professional dancer, choreographer and Director of Dance at the Paris Opera Ballet) designing the costumes for the stage. [12]
