Alan 'Rambo' Rathbone (1958/59 - 4 June 2016)[1] was an English professional rugby league footballer of the 1980s, playing at representative level for Great Britain, and at club level for Rochdale Hornets, Leigh, Bradford Northern, and Warrington, as a Second-row, or Loose forward/Lock, i.e. number 11 or 12, or 13.[2]
Playing career
International honours
Alan Rathbone won caps for Great Britain while at Bradford Northern in 1982 against France, and Australia, in 1983 against France (2 matches), and in 1985 against France (2 matches).[3]
In addition to the above Test Matches, Alan Rathbone played Loose forward/Lock in Great Britain’s 7-8 defeat by France in the friendly at Stadio Pierluigi Penzo, Venice on Saturday 31 July 1982.
County Cup final appearances
Alan Rathbone played Loose forward/Lock in Bradford Northern's 5-10 defeat by Castleford in the 1981 Yorkshire Cup final during the 1981–82 season at Headingley Stadium, Leeds, on Saturday 3 October 1981, and played Loose forward/Lock, and was sent-off for a late-tackle on Ian Potter in Warrington's 8-34 defeat by Wigan in the 1985 Lancashire Cup final during the 1985–86 season at Knowsley Road, St. Helens, on Sunday 13 October 1985.[4]
John Player Special Trophy final appearances
Alan Rathbone played as an Interchange/Substitute, i.e. number 15, (replacing Hooker Kevin Tamati) in the 4-18 defeat to Wigan in the 1986–87 John Player Special Trophy final during the 1986–87 season at Central Park, Wigan on Saturday 10 January 1987.[5]
