72nd Street is a local station on the IND Eighth Avenue Line of the New York City Subway. Located at 72nd Street and Central Park West on the Upper West Side, it is served by the C train at all times except nights, when the A train takes over service. The B train provides additional service here on weekdays except nights.

This underground station, opened on September 10, 1932,^[1]^[4] has two levels, each of which has from west to east, one side platform, one local track and one express track. Northbound trains stop on the upper level while southbound trains stop on the lower level.

Both platforms have name tablets reading "72ND ST." in white sans serif lettering on a blue background and black border and small "72" signs in white numbering on a black background at regular intervals. Directional signs in white lettering on a black background are below the name tablets. Mosaic signs in white lettering on a blue background on the upper level direct passengers to the staircases going down to the lower level.

This station's main fare control area is at the north end. Two staircases from the lower level go up to the upper level, where a turnstile bank provides access to and from the station. Outside fare control, there is a token booth and two staircases going up to either western corners of 72nd Street and Central Park West.^[5] The northwest staircase, outside the Dakota apartment building, is made of stone.

This station has an unstaffed fare control area at the south end. One staircase from the lower level goes up to the upper level, where two HEET turnstiles lead to a single staircase going up to the southwest corner of 70th Street and Central Park West.^[5] This entrance had previously been closed,^[5] but has since reopened.

This station formerly had a fare control area at the center going up to 71st Street.^[6] Evidence of this includes a fenced off staircase on the lower level and new tiling on the upper level.

Under the 2015–2019 MTA Capital Plan, the station, along with thirty other New York City Subway stations, will undergo a complete overhaul and would be entirely closed for up to 6 months. Updates would include cellular service, Wi-Fi, charging stations, improved signage, and improved station lighting.^[7]^[8]
