The 1980 Tanduay Esquires season was the sixth season of the franchise in the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA).
Summary
Open Conference: Tanduay lost their first game of the season to Honda, as they played with only one import, Kevin Cluess, his partner, 7-0 Paul Zaretsky sprained his ankle in a workout and was sent home in favor of 6-8 Odell Ball, a former center of Marquette University. [1] The Esquires finish the first round of eliminations with two wins and seven losses and had a similar two victories in nine outings in the second round for a lowly 4-win, 14-loss slate after 18 games, tied with Royal Tru-Orange at the bottom of the standings.
All-Filipino Conference: The Esquires advances into the semifinal round by posting a 5-4 and 3-2 won-loss slates in the eliminations and quarterfinal phase. [2] In a one-round robin among the four semifinalist, the Esquires lost to unbeaten Crispa, 98-101, during the last playing date on December 4, as they failed to create a three-way tie and a playoff with Toyota for the second finals berth. Tanduay placed third by winning their series against Gilbey's Gin.
